Last month the St. Stephen’s St. Agnes clubs fair displayed around 55 clubs open for students to join. All these clubs are student-run, and there are no rules to what your club is as long as it fits into the mission of our community. 

Profe Bartis, Clubs coordinator, stated, “The program is a great opportunity for students to shape the school based on what their passions are and what they like.” Among the 55 clubs, there are a few that stood out to us, which we will now highlight.

The Cheer Club is a brand new club led by Bailee Montgomary ‘27, Dior Brown ‘27, and Taliyah Figaro ‘27. Dior dances outside of school, and has appeared on Fox News 5, dancing ballet. 

She has always wanted to be a cheerleader and when she heard the Upper School didn’t have a cheerleading program, she knew she had to bring her A game and make one. 

Last year in middle school, Dior and Talyiah led the step club, and they hope to have cheers inspired by step. They also plan to cheer at school events such as Sleepy Thompson.

The Bonsai Club is one of the more popular clubs among the students and is led by Mira Henry ‘24 and Claire Helmrich ‘24. Mr. Riley, an art teacher at SSSAS, helps each student grow their very own bonsai tree.

Annually the club holds two bake sales to raise money for field trips to bonsai museums and spread awareness about the club. Mr. Riley loves the art of bonsai and hopes to not only teach that but also the science behind it. He hopes that students can take their trees into further parts of their lives. 

“Now is a perfect time for them (students) to start creating their own bonsai, and they can have them for decades to come. They will have mature, interesting trees while they become mature, interesting people,” he said. 

The Girls Who Code Club is a club that is mainly focused on empowering girls to become involved in coding.“Coding and programming is a field dominated by men, but this club attempts to help women strengthen their coding skills.” Co-president Bryce Wilson ‘25 said.  

Bryce works alongside Sandhya Augustine ‘25, and Amanda Klock ‘24 to try and break the barrier some girls feel when trying to get involved in STEM. Sandyha Augustine states “the goal of the club is to promote girls getting into code and specifically programming, but (also) STEM in general because that doesn’t happen a lot.” 

Girls Who Code Club not only codes programs but also functions as a safe space for girls who are interested in code to come together and talk. 

These clubs are just some of the many clubs offered at our school, and we encourage you to get involved and find one that interests you!
