Rishi Rich: The New Prime Minister of the UK
Great Britain has a reputation for having their prime ministers only hold office for a short period of time. Throughout history, various British leaders have had a short professional lifespan, and that was made even more pronounced when Liz Truss was only in office for 44 days. Barely a month.
She resigned from office on October 20th, and only a few days later Rishi Sunak was put into office. Sunak is 42 years old, attended Winchester College and Oxford, and is married to Indian Billionaire, Akshata Murthy. He began his political career in 2010, and started his work with the conservative party. Prior to becoming Prime Minister, Sunak was Britain’s Chief Secretary to the Treasury. Then from 2020-2022, he served as chancellor of the Exchequer. Now he is the first Hindu and first person of color to lead England.
In September, he ran against Liz Truss for the position of Britain’s Prime Minister, but lost the election with 42.6% of the vote. When Liz Truss was in office she put the financial market in a panicked state due to the tax cuts she enforced. Banks were scrambling, mortgage rates skyrocketed, and on October 20th, she resigned. After other candidates dropped out of the running, and Sunak received the majority of the votes, he was elected unanimously, and is now the Prime Minister. Only time will tell how long this Prime Minister will be in office!
