We are excited to welcome Mr. Doorley to St. Stephen’s & St Agnes School Upper School. Mr. Doorley is currently a long term substitute teacher for Mr. Ebner, teaching junior year US History as well as Practical Economics. Before making his way to the Upper School, he started the school year teaching 6th grade World History as a long term substitute at the Middle School.
Mr. Doorley grew up “right where George Washington crossed the Delaware River,” both on the New Jersey and Pennsylvania side, he said, “It’s a fun note as a history teacher”. He attended a private Methodist school called Pennington, and he said, “It’s actually one of the reasons I was interested in working here, how familiar the daily life of St. Stephen & St. Agnes feels to Pennington.” Mr. Doorley attended Boston University, “Not Boston College” where he received a degree in communications.
About his career switch to teaching, Mr. Doorley said, “I have taught and mentored throughout my entire professional career. I’ve run a couple companies, and when running those companies, one of the things I enjoyed the most was actually hiring young people and bringing them up to the company, training them, working with them. And that led me to teach at my church, and I’ve been doing that for a couple years.” When last spring one of his companies he worked for ran out of money, his wife suggested that he try teaching full time.
Outside of the classroom, Mr. Doorley enjoys spending time with his family, he said, “I have a six-year-old son who I absolutely adore. One of my favorite people in the world. He and I like to go on long walks, and it’s fun to sort of engage in conversation with a six-year-old who’s very curious about the world.” Mr. Doorley also has a dog named Hamilton, who is named after the Formula One race car driver Lewis Hamilton. He is excited to continue teaching and looks forward to more engaging conversations with his students!
