It’s 2025! And with a new year comes new trends, aesthetics, and styles. However, this winter isn’t over yet! So, the journalists here at The Voice have decided to interview the newly returned students at St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School about what they have been seeing trending this winter.
We first asked senior Lilyrose Golden what kind of clothes she has been seeing both on and off campus this winter. Lilyrose remarked that sweaters are making a comeback this winter, boots, which were already a “winter staple” are really having their moment, and the functionality of the knit dress just can’t seem to be ignored this year. Lilyrose also points out that “headbands are kind of making a comeback.” As there also seems to be a rise in headband usage at SSSAS. Lilyrose has also noticed that there have been a lot of “sheer black tights under skirts” this winter. Of course, the classic SSSAS winter staples were not ignored, as Lilyrose mentioned how UGGs and flare leggings remain very popular.
For new clothes, Lilyrose has been seeing a lot of different colored jeans. Leopard print, red, yellow, and even studded jeans have been sighted by the senior. Lilyrose rationalizes this influx of colored or patterned jeans with, “we’re obviously not allowed to wear like blue jeans… so I feel like colored jeans are like maybe a little workaround.”
When asked if she participated in any of these trends, Lilyrose said she has definitely hopped onto the sweater trend, “I swear like half my closet is sweaters now.” Lilyrose has also really enjoyed wearing boots this winter and wants to get a pair of “normal black boots” so she can wear those instead of her black cowboy boots. On the contrary to hopping on trends, we asked Lilyrose what trends she thinks we should get rid of in 2025. While Lilyrose likes bows, the overuse of them on clothing is something that she thinks should be left behind. Lilyrose also anticipates that as the year goes on, the use of fake tan will go away as well. Finally, Lilyrose is hoping that people will begin to dress more modestly. Junior Arleigh Womack also weighed in on this topic, saying how he hopes that the trend of wearing Crocs will decrease in 2025.
Some of Lilyrose’s style influences include Demetra Dias and Acquired Style (or Brigette Pheloung), who are both style influencers on TikTok. Lilyrose is inspired by Demetra because “[her outfits are] like comfy but cute at the same time.” Lilyrose also enjoys Acquired Style’s page with her “fashion lifestyle” looks.
We also interviewed sophomore Dior Brown and she agreed with Lilyrose that UGGs, especially the UGG Tasman slippers, have become really popular this winter because “they’re just really comfortable… I can definitely see the hype.” Dior also says that hoodies and leather pants are definitely in, even saying “I wear a hoodie like 95% of the time”. She also added that leather pants are a staple and that she “will definitely be looking out [for a pair] soon”. Similarly, Junior Ava Swedlund told us that she has been seeing a lot of Lululemon on campus so far this school year.
Contrary to Lilyrose, Dior says that she doesn’t want to leave bows in 2024. She told us, “It’s just like a nice addition to an outfit.” When asked about her style influence, Dior said that her style is influenced by her mom, telling us that “she’s always been like a style role model for me”. Other style influences for Dior are Bailee Montgomery (‘27) and Renee Jenkins (‘26). Most importantly, Dior says that “(she likes) seeing how different people put different outfits together, but also kind of put their own spin on it.”
Lastly, we talked to Arleigh and Ava to get their thoughts on the fashion of 2025. Both Ava and Arleigh agreed that layers are definitely in. Ava had great reasoning for this, as they told us “You never know when the heat will be on in the room.”
As far as personal style, Arleigh says that he likes to stick to more earthy and “skin-tone-like” colors, often wearing tan or brown.
When it comes to fashion aesthetics, this winter was definitely full of them. So, we asked the students whether or not they jumped onto any of these trends this winter. When asked whether she jumped from trend to trend, Lilyrose replied, “yeah I definitely hop around, but I do appreciate the clean girl aesthetic.” We also asked Dior who says that she doesn’t identify with a specific aesthetic. Saying that “people say aesthetic is like clothing, but it’s kind of so much more than that. It’s kind of a lifestyle.”
When asked about whether or not he sticks with a certain aesthetic Arleigh said his style sticks with the “old money” aesthetic. Ava however, has dove into a more bohemian look this year. “I love Free People,” they told us, “I feel like it’s very uplifting and it’s not restricting at all.” When asked about following an aesthetic, they simply said that “it’s fun to experiment with things, and I love patterns and just mixing things together.”
One of Ava’s major style influences is Alice Pagani, an Italian model and actress, whom they see on Pinterest. In doing so, they often model their outfits off of the old two-thousands, or Y2K, look. Arleigh however, doesn’t take inspiration from any celebrities. He told us that he thinks a lot of celebrities have to be flashy with their outfits, but that “A lot of the time [he doesn’t] wanna be as flashy or crazy, but [he wants to] at least look presentable all the time.”
With Winter Formal coming up we asked the students about their predictions for what people will be wearing at the dance. Dior told us that she is expecting to see a lot of brightly colored, short dresses instead of sequined dresses. Lilyrose agreed saying, “I think people are really liking the jewel tones this year.” Ava also says that the shorter mini dress is classic, but that they have been seeing more slits on the leg recently, especially at other schools. As for the guys, Arleigh told us he is expecting to see a trade in of traditionally colored suits for brightly colored ones.
