As it nears November 8th, all Saints involved in the fall play, The Servant of Two Masters, are busy prepping the set, assembling costumes, and practicing their lines. Only a few weeks out from the first performance, various members’ shared their perspectives on its progress so far and an inside scoop on what the audience should expect.
To give a brief summary of the plot, the play is set in Venice and follows the servant Truffaldino, who is offered a job with two masters at the same time. Several complications arise as Truffaldino navigates his separate jobs, filling the story with comedy, romance, and mix-ups. This comedy was originally written by the Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni in 1746 but has several adaptations that make it more modern and relatable in the present day. As Ms. Carlson, the show’s director, said “it’s not just set in the 1700s, it’s anachronistic, which means that there are references all the way through to contemporary things that help bring it forward.”
Junior Dava Boyce, the head of crew and deck management, voiced that “on the tech side of things it’s coming along pretty well” and shared that they are feeling excited for more progress to be made in preparation of the performances. They also stated, “Personally I really like the design, I feel as if it’s a lot different than things we’ve done in the past.”
Seniors Gracie Hunsicker and Charles McElwain both shared that the style of this play is something that they have never done before due to the physical comedy and over-the-top relationships between the characters, which they agree is “exciting and also hard because a lot of the previous shows we’ve done are more grounded, whereas for this we all have to be much more over-the-top,” as Charles stated.
“I think our company of actors is so vibrant and so all-in. We have an audience, and I hope more people will come than in the past, but usually the audience is enthusiastic, so we get that energy going back and forth from the stage and the audience,” Ms. Carlson expressed.
All in all, our Saints are excited to bring forward another play for the school community to watch, and are excited for people’s reactions to the pop-culture references and humor. Tickets can be found online at Ludus or bought before the show in our CPAC lobby starting November 8th. Show out!
